Without further ado, we graciously present the seventh issue of abracadabra❢ ~ WIND MUSEUM 🪁
Last year, after wrapping up our first season of the zine, Maddy and I put our heads together for some deep dreaming and manifesting how the next year of publications would take shape. While there were many mysteries still to uncover, one decision was crystallized from the ether ~ we wanted to do a kite issue. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that several of our favorite artists, most admired creatives, and multi-talented pals would deliver us a string of wind surfing diamonds of the caliber we humbly received.
Normally, we ask contributors to submit a jpg or some words, a mantra or doodle. This time we asked each artist to construct a functional, flying kite from scratch (even the Magician’s Assistant!). The decimal submissions we received were sent via mail or cheerfully delivered to my doorstep, where I greeted friends and new friends alike to chitchat about their creations, learning about their processes and our mutual admiration of wind arts. What a dream! 𖦹 Thank you more please 𖦹
One by one, as each kite came in, Maddy and I realized we were going to put to task figuring out how to showcase these masterpieces crafted with fully recycled materials, delicate cyanotype, meticulous stitching, and the like. Ultimately, we decided this issue needed to be printed in full color, so we broke our risograph form to honor the detail and labor that went into each piece.
Documenting these wind wonders was also going to be a challenge: one that could only be trusted to a triple air sign. Enter Leah Wendzinski, photographer extraordinaire, who spent a day with us flying the kites as a kite train and documenting these puppies in their element.
We also decided we needed to show these kites off in person, which we did, on a perfect Chicago summer night at middlebrow. Nestled between the wooden canopy hung our beloved sky diamonds for all to see, blowin’ in the wind city breeze for the wonderful folks who came to share in the spectacle of our contributors’ whimsical works. Our hearts go out to everyone who stopped by the function, picked up a copy of the mag, and celebrated the craftsmanship of Wind Museum’s creators.
